From food bloggers to celebs like Mirand Kerr and Lauren Conrad, everyone in the health world seems to be drinking hot water with lemon in the morning. Here are three reasons why this is one trend you should adopt:
1. Jumpstarts detoxification – When your body is busy digesting lots of food, it takes up a good chunk of its focus. If, on the other hand, your digestive system is sitting pretty with extra energy, your body starts to work on detoxification, which is good news for beauty and anti-aging.
Since lemon water stimulates your digestive juices and liver without requiring much digestion, it’s a great way to wake up your system and remind it to do some housecleaning – without bogging down your digestive energy. For this reason, in the morning I take my probiotics followed by lots of room temperature filtered water and hot water with lemon… and wait to have breakfast until I know I’m actually hungry. While you’ve given your body a break during the night, this stretches that rest / detox time out a little bit.
2. Replaces coffee – Sometimes it’s not just what you do, it’s what you don’t do! Coffee is a stimulant that raises cortisol levels, which can lead to weight gain. While it is a natural food that comes from beans and has antioxidants, for me the fact that it’s such a strong stimulant takes it off the beauty food list, especially if you’re having multiple cups a day.
Try out the power of creating a new morning habit – it will start you off on the right (and hydrated) foot and set forth good vibes for the day. Who knows, after you drink your hot water with lemon, you may go crazy and start reaching for a green smoothie or juice for breakfast!
3. Adds alkalinity and antioxidants – You get all the goodness of the fresh lemon juice – it has high levels of vitamin C, an antioxidant and immune system booster, and lots of other nourishing vitamins and minerals such as potassium, B6, magnesium, niacin, and the list goes on. It’s also a very alkaline food, which will help bring your body’s pH into balance. (An acidic body promotes disease.)
How to do it
Squeeze the juice of 1/2 to a whole fresh (preferably organic) lemon into a cup. (Do not use prepackaged lemon juice.) Add warm filtered water. Lemon water can be taken in the morning and throughout the day. Enjoy!
