If you make an effort to eat clean but you still experience acid reflux, bloating or difficulty losing those last couple of pounds, this article is for you.
As it turns out, it’s not just what we’re putting into our bodies that matters, but how we combine those foods together. I’m constantly learning about nutrition and testing things out on my own body – and this is one thing that made a HUGE difference for me personally.
Why does food combining matter?
It makes digestion more efficient, freeing up energy in your body – which means less aging and more beauty!
The science behind it
Your body digests protein and carbohydrates differently. Carbohydrates are digested with alkaline juices, while protein is digested with acidic juices. Eating protein and starchy carbohydrates together causes a neutralization of the digestive juices and a more inefficient and much longer digestion.
When your digestive system is sluggish and overloaded, it takes time and energy away from other tasks, like cleaning up the toxins, bacteria, fungi and cancers that can lead to chronic disease. In general, you want to be moving things toward the exit in a timely and orderly fashion – or more toxins in the body, reduced energy and a more difficult time losing weight is the result.
How to execute – it’s easier than it seems
There are two big things you need to take action on:
1. Each meal should be a “protein” meal or a “starch” meal. In other words, keep proteins like eggs, meat and fish away from grains and starchy vegetables like quinoa, oats, lentils, beans and potatoes. Non starchy vegetables like leafy greens, carrots, asparagus, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, zuccinni and garlic can be eaten at any time.
So instead of eating a burger with a bun, for example, try it over a salad. Or instead of chicken and rice, try rice and quinoa with lots of cooked veggies.
2. Eat fruit first. Fruit digests quickly, so it’s best to eat fruit alone on an empty stomach. Otherwise, it may get “stuck” behind something that digests a lot slower, like a steak. You can combine fruit with vegetables or salad without worry. Melons are an outlier and should be eaten by themselves.
Food combining is not all or nothing – you can utilize the tool when you can and see benefits. One last tip is to avoid cold iced water, which slows digestion. Hot water or herbal tea, on the other hand, actually helps you digest. Try sipping on some hot water with lemon while you eat rather than iced water, and when you encounter digestive distress, try some chamomile tea to soothe your system.
Now you know – it’s not just what we eat, but how we combine it as that leads to radiant beauty and weight loss. Try it and let me know your thoughts!
